Shopify vs WordPress: Which Is Better for a Small Business Website in 2025? When you're planning a new website for your small business, one of the first decisions you'll face is which platform to build it on. Two names come up more than any other Shopify and WordPress. Both are excellent platforms. Both power millions of websites around the world. But they're built for different purposes, and choosing the wrong one for your business can cost you time, money and a lot of frustration. I build websites on both platforms, so I'm not here to push you towards either one. Here's an honest breakdown to help you figure out which makes more sense for your business. What Is Shopify? Shopify is an all-in-one platform originally built for e-commerce selling products online. In recent years it's expanded significantly and is now used by all kinds of businesses, including service-based ones. Everything in Shopify is handled in one place. Your hosting, your security, your payment processing, your store management it's all built in and managed for you. You pay a monthly subscription (starting from around £25/month) and Shopify handles the technical side so you can focus on your business. Shopify is best for: Businesses selling products online Businesses that want simplicity and don't want to deal with technical maintenance Businesses that plan to scale their online sales over time What Is WordPress? WordPress is the world's most popular website platform powering over 40% of all websites on the internet. Unlike Shopify, it's open-source software, meaning it's free to use and highly customisable. WordPress gives you enormous flexibility. You can build almost anything with it from a simple five-page business website to a complex membership platform. But that flexibility comes with more responsibility. You'll need to manage your own hosting, keep your plugins and theme updated, and handle your own security. WordPress is best for: Businesses that need a highly customised or content-heavy website Businesses with a dedicated blog or publishing strategy Businesses that want full control over every aspect of their site The Key Differences Ease of Use Shopify wins here. It's designed to be user-friendly and most business owners can make basic updates themselves without any technical knowledge. WordPress has a steeper learning curve and managing a WordPress site often requires a bit more technical confidence or a developer on hand. E-commerce If you're selling products, Shopify is purpose-built for it. The checkout experience, payment processing, inventory management and order tracking are all built in and work seamlessly. WordPress can sell products too through a plugin called WooCommerce, but it requires more setup and maintenance to get right. Flexibility and Customisation WordPress wins here. Because it's open-source with thousands of plugins and themes available, there's almost nothing you can't build on WordPress. Shopify is more limited in terms of deep customisation, though for most small businesses it offers more than enough. Cost This is more nuanced than it first appears. WordPress itself is free, but you'll pay for hosting (typically £5-£20/month), your theme (often £40-£100 one-time) and any premium plugins you need. Shopify starts at around £25/month with everything included. Over the course of a year, the costs are often similar but Shopify's are more predictable, while WordPress costs can vary depending on what you need. Security and Maintenance Shopify handles all of this for your security patches, updates, SSL certificates. It's all managed as part of your subscription. With WordPress, security and maintenance is your responsibility. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it does mean keeping plugins updated regularly and making sure your site is backed up. Many WordPress site owners pay a developer a small monthly fee to handle this for them. SEO Both platforms are capable of excellent SEO results. WordPress has a slight edge in terms of the depth of SEO control you have particularly with plugins like Rank Math or Yoast. But Shopify's SEO capabilities are very solid and more than sufficient for most small businesses. So Which Should You Choose? Here's my honest recommendation based on the type of business you run: Choose Shopify if: You sell or plan to sell physical or digital products online You want a platform that handles the technical side for you You value simplicity and ease of use over deep customisation You're building a service business and want something clean and professional without the maintenance headache Choose WordPress if: You need a highly customised website with specific functionality Content and blogging are central to your business strategy You have access to a developer for ongoing support You want complete control over every aspect of your site Not sure? For most small service-based businesses tradespeople, consultants, local retailers, therapists, fitness professionals I typically recommend Shopify. It's simpler to manage, reliable, secure and produces excellent results. You can focus on running your business rather than maintaining your website. If content marketing and blogging are central to your strategy, or if you need specific functionality that Shopify can't provide, then WordPress is worth the extra complexity.
